Friends, when it comes to setting up your own Paudhayan, soil is the most essential ingredient. Yet ironically, it\u2019s often the most overlooked. Soil is the lifeline of your plants. It provides them with the nutrients they need to grow. But that\u2019s not all\u2014how much water a plant receives, how long it stays moist, and how well the roots develop all depend entirely on the type of soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to understand your soil\u2014its quality, nutrient content, and the size of its particles\u2014so you can match it with the specific needs of your plants. Let\u2019s break it down and understand which kind of soil works best for which type of plant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf35Sandy Soil \u2013 Ideal for Drought-Tolerant, Tough Plants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Soil is made up of particles of different sizes. When these particles are large, there's more space between them, allowing water to drain out quickly. As a result, sandy soil does not retain moisture for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, choose sandy soil for plants that need minimal water\u2014like cacti, succulents, and other thorny or thick-leaved varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the flip side, when soil particles are so tiny that they can\u2019t be seen with the naked eye\u2014like in mud or silt\u2014they trap water for a longer time. Because its difficult for water to seep through the tiny spaces between particles in this soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes clayey soil a great choice for plants that thrive in moist conditions. Think of colocasia (arbi), caladium, sweet potato, lilies, irises<\/b> and many types of ferns\u2014all of which love ample water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An added advantage? If you can\u2019t water your plants every other day, clayey soil has your back. It retains moisture for longer and dries out slowly, so your plants stay hydrated even with less frequent watering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf31Loamy Soil \u2013 The All-Rounder<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Loamy soil strikes the perfect balance\u2014it\u2019s made up of particles that aren\u2019t too big (like sand) or too fine (like clay). This balanced structure allows water to stay just long enough for roots to absorb it but drains well enough to prevent waterlogging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except for a few extreme cases, most plants do well in loamy soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When in doubt about which soil to use for a particular plant, you can safely go with loam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can\u2019t find loamy soil? No worries. You can make your own by mixing equal parts of clay with sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
