Hello Friends!

Today we are going to talk about a wonderful plant that is known as Mother of Millions. Yes, you heard it right! It produces lots of plantlets on the tips of its leaves that is why the name.

Why to Plant Them Around You

The plant looks like a tiny little palm tree and a pot full of these plants resembles a miniature palm garden. Saplings produced on the leaves drop off the plant with a little jerk or even in the flash of the wind. These tiny plantlets are so strong that they do not die even on the concrete slab and start growing then and there with whatever little moisture they may get from the air. Clearly, these plants are not only a delight to the eyes and take very little space to grow, they are extremely easy to care also.

Native Place

These plants are originally found in the island of Madagascar. This area is so hot and dry that plants living there have developed their own unique characteristics to fight with such a harsh climate. Mother of Millions adapted to its surroundings by being very hard to kill and of course by producing millions of offsprings. However harsh the climate is and however prolonged the drought is, some of them always survive.

Care

Caring of these fellows doesn’t require much time and effort. They are very low maintenance plants. These are your perfect green partners even when you are very busy and have no time for gardening at all.

Water Needs

As these are natives of an arid land, they require little water. Watering them once a week during winters and twice or thrice a week in summers according to the temperature is sufficient.

Soil

Soil with good drainage property is ideally suited for them. With little moisture, they can survive in sand and gravels too.

Temperature and Placement

Mother of Millions is well suited for places with abundant sunshine and high temperature. In low light conditions it becomes ‘leggy’. So, if placed indoors, install grow light over the plant for perfect growth.

Pot and Planter

Drainage hole at the bottom of their planter is a must. Water must not get logged as they are very sensitive to high humidity. They grow happily in any type of pot but prefer a terracotta or cement pot or a plastic/fiber pot with lots of holes underneath.

What to Feed

Fertilizers are not required at all. You better save it for other plants. For faster growth though, little fertilizer may be fed to the plant once a month at most.

A Word of Caution

As a Mother of Millions plant reproduces literally millions of plants during its lifetime and these plantlets also reproduce in the same way eventually and most of them survive in balanced environment of homes and garden, always keep them away from other pots. Otherwise after a few months each and every pot in your garden will be filled with these little fellows.

That is all you need to know about this wonderful creation of nature. You may DIY your little fairy garden with these or add some texture with their geometrically arranged leaves to your boring office desk. They will never disappoint you even after your prolonged ignorance.

Feel free to ask anything else you need to know about Mother of Millions. Any new information or suggestion is also welcome. Now its time to say good bye to you my lovely friends. Soon we will befriend a new wonder of nature. Till then Happy Paudhayan!

Bye!
